This family home in Auckland has recently undergone a renovation involving the addition of a new 85m² extension including a master bedroom with ensuite, lounge area, guest toilet and study. The homeowners wanted to make sure quality, long-lasting materials were used throughout the home to minimise maintenance down the track. When it came to wall linings, 10mm Elephant Standard Plasterboard hit the brief, offering strength, enhanced bracing and a quality finish.

For this project, 10mm Elephant Standard boards were specified throughout the bedroom and living areas of the extension. Weighing just 6.9kg per panel, the boards exceed AS/NZS 2588 standards for gypsum plasterboard, while offering bracing and fire resistance — all in a slim 10mm thickness.

Elephant Plasterboard also supplied their 10mm Elephant AquaSmart boards for the ensuite and guest toilet. Designed for wet areas such as bathrooms, laundries and kitchens, the specially formulated AquaSmart board provides excellent moisture resistance.

Working with Elephant Plasterboard offered advantages throughout the specification and installation process. Elephant’s bracing calculator made it easy for the architects to meet design and bracing requirements, and installation was fast and straightforward.

“The builder was impressed with the light weight and strength of the board, making it easy to handle the sheets and install,” says the homeowner. The high quality surface of the boards also meant the painter could more easily achieve a Grade 5 paint finish.

Elephant Plasterboard is manufactured to the International Standard ISO 9001, and has been specifically designed to meet New Zealand and Australian Standards and Building Code requirements. Elephant Plasterboard has been marketed internationally since 1975 and the product has established an excellent history of performance for its use in buildings throughout New Zealand and Australia. Elephant Plasterboard meets the durability requirements of the NZBC and BCA and is subject to use, installation and maintenance in accordance with the Manufacturer’s instructions.

The NZBC durability requirement under Clause B2.3 c) and d) for general linings is between 5 and 15 years depending on the ease of access and replacement.

Elephant Plasterboard systems, used as a general lining, including adhesive fixing when using an adhesive recommended by the manufacturer for this application, satisfy the 15 year durability requirements of the NZBC. Elephant Plasterboard systems fixed mechanically using only screws or nails achieve a 50 year durability performance.
