The Wakefield Hospital Redevelopment is a $185 million+ project delivered across three stages to construct the largest private hospital in the Wellington region, serving New Zealand’s capital city and the wider lower North Island region. With the site operating as a hospital since the 1920s, the redevelopment required the demolition of several outdated structures to make way for seismically sound buildings that represent the best in modern healthcare design principles. Belgotex New Zealand worked directly with the team at Evolution Healthcare, as well as Sydney-based healthcare architects HSPC and local architects CCM, to supply flooring across all stages of the project. High-quality Gerflor products were specified to ensure the hospital maintains a hygienic environment over the long term.
A highlight of the redevelopment was the creation of seven new operating theatres designed with hygiene as a top priority, incorporating technology such as HEPA filtration and LED light disinfection to limit the spread of pathogens. To support this high-hygiene design initiative, Belgotex supplied Gerflor Mipolam Affinity flooring, a homogeneous sheet vinyl with Gerflor’s patented Evercare surface treatment. Applied during manufacturing, UV laser technology creates an incredibly dense, durable and stain-resistant surface that uses 10 times less cleaning products to maintain compared to a non-treated floor covering, significantly reducing maintenance costs, environmental impact, and cleaning downtime over the lifetime of the floor.
Belgotex also supplied a wide selection of premium vinyl products throughout Wakefield Hospital, totalling more than 10,000m². From washable wall vinyls to chemical-resistant flooring, each product was chosen to deliver ease of cleaning and long-term durability to support high hygiene standards across the hospital, while achieving area-specific performance criteria, such as slip resistance for bathrooms, and high wear resistance for heavily trafficked areas such as corridors.

Having a local representative from Belgotex available for site visits allowed for increased understanding of the project requirements and real-world challenges, enabling better flow of information around logistics and the installation progress across multiple stakeholders. With the hospital's floor being a primary focus with regard to hygiene, being able to provide in-person advice regarding product selection, installation techniques and post-installation care was crucial to enabling a clean and hygienic environment across areas with vastly differing challenges, from operating theatres to offices.
