Commercial Concrete
Description

PeterFell Commercial Concrete provides architectural, high-durability coloured concrete solutions designed specifically for large-scale commercial, public infrastructure, and institutional applications. High-grade liquid iron oxide pigments are introduced directly into the concrete matrix during batching, providing long-lasting, full-depth colour that will not chip, peel, or fade under heavy pedestrian or vehicular traffic.

Suitable for interior retail floors, commercial foyers, exterior plazas, streetscapes, and acoustic wall panels, the system offers high aesthetic design flexibility alongside heavy-duty performance. The concrete can be specified in a wide variety of finishes—ranging from polished and steel-trowelled internal floors to heavy aggregate grinds, sandblasted, or bush-hammered exterior pavements—and is supported by specialised commercial protective sealers and anti-graffiti coatings.

Components / Options:

  • Integrated full-depth oxide colour system (custom commercial matching and standard palette options)
  • Interior and exterior finishing techniques (e.g. steel trowelled, honed/polished, exposed aggregate, bush-hammered, sandblasted)
  • Custom formliners and pattern control joint layout designs
  • Commercial-grade sealers, anti-graffiti treatments, and dust-proofing sealers (e.g. PFL Industrial Sealers, C2 Hard/Polish systems)
Key Features
  • Integral Full-Depth Colouring: Oxides are thoroughly batched into the concrete mix, ensuring colour consistency through the complete slab thickness to eliminate surface chipping or wear under heavy traffic.
  • High-Traffic Durability: Engineered to withstand rigorous commercial foot traffic, vehicular movement, and intensive cleaning regimens.
  • Low Lifecycle Maintenance: Permanent colour and protective sealers reduce the need for recurring surface paint, coatings, or floor replacement.
  • Aesthetic Versatility: Compatible with multiple mechanical grinding, texturing, and formliner methods to create custom patterns, logos, and textures across floors and walls.
  • Slip & Glare Control: Exterior texturing options reduce surface glare and provide slip-resistant performance in public pedestrian access routes
Scope of Use
  • Suitable for interior and exterior applications in commercial retail, office buildings, educational facilities, healthcare, hospitality, and public infrastructure projects.
  • Ideal for high-traffic pedestrian zones, plaza paving, streetscapes, internal foyers, exposed wall panels, and acoustic barriers.
  • Compatible with commercial underfloor heating and integrated floor services.
  • Applicable across all New Zealand geographic climate zones, wind environments, and exposure classifications.
Limitations on Use
  • Structural concrete design, slab thickness, reinforcement, and joint layout must be specified by qualified structural engineers in accordance with NZS 3101 and NZS 3109.
  • Surface finishes must be selected to match intended performance; smooth polished or trowelled finishes are limited to dry interior spaces and are not suitable for wet exterior pedestrian ramps or stairs.
  • Final colour appearance may vary due to regional cement types, aggregate variations, water-cement ratios, and curing methods; site sample panels (mock-ups) are recommended prior to main placement.
  • Application of commercial sealers requires dry substrate conditions and specific curing timeframes as outlined in PeterFell technical literature.
Statement of Building Code Compliance

PeterFell Commercial Concrete, if designed, used, installed, and maintained in accordance with the conditions of PeterFell’s technical documents, will comply with, or contribute to compliance with, the following performance provisions of the NZ Building Code:

  • Clause B1 STRUCTURE: Performance B1.3.1, B1.3.2, and B1.3.4 (contributes to structural performance when engineered in accordance with NZS 3101)
  • Clause B2 DURABILITY: Performance B2.3.1(a) 50 years (for structural elements), B2.3.1(b) 15 years, and B2.3.1(c) 5 years (for sealers and surface treatments)
  • Clause C3 FIRE AFFECTING AREAS BEYOND THE FIRE SOURCE: Performance C3.4(a) (walls) and C3.4(b) (floors, critical radiant flux testing to ISO 9239-1)
  • Clause D1 ACCESS ROUTES: Performance D1.3.3(d) (slip resistance in commercial pedestrian routes)
  • Clause E2 EXTERNAL MOISTURE: Performance E2.3.2 and E2.3.7 (when specified with compatible sealers and correct joint detailing)   Clause F2 HAZARDOUS BUILDING MATERIALS: Performance F2.3.1
  • Clause H1 ENERGY EFFICIENCY: Performance H1.3.1, H1.3.2E (contributes to internal thermal mass efficiency)

Contribution to Compliance:

  • B1 Structure: Contributes to structural requirements when concrete mix designs, reinforcement, and structural thickness comply with NZS 3101, NZS 3109, and project engineering designs.
  • B2 Durability: Inorganic Bayferrox iron oxide pigments are lightfast and UV-stable for the design life of the building. Protective commercial sealers maintain surface integrity when reapplied according to maintenance schedules.
  • C3 Fire Performance: Cured concrete is non-combustible (classified as Group 1-S under NZBC C/AS1–C/AS2). Specified floor sealers meet critical radiant flux thresholds under ISO 9239.1 testing.
  • D1 Access Routes: Exterior textured finishes (e.g. bush-hammered, sandblasted, medium trowel) provide compliant slip resistance under AS 4586 / NZBC D1/AS1 for public walkways.
  • F2 Hazardous Building Materials: Cured coloured concrete and low-VOC commercial sealers release no toxic off-gassing and present no health risk in service.
In-Service History

PeterFell coloured concrete systems have been supplied and installed across New Zealand for over 25 years. The system has been specified in numerous commercial developments, university campuses, public plazas, and municipal streetscapes nationwide.

Other Performance Attributes
  • UV Stability: Inorganic Bayferrox iron oxide pigments maintain lightfastness and resist fading under intense UV exposure.
  • Abrasion & Impact Resistance: Engineered concrete mix options deliver high surface hardness to withstand heavy commercial traffic.
  • Fire Testing: Commercial floor sealers tested to ISO 9239.1 for surface flammability.
