Scope of Use

SPS vinyl floor wastes are engineered for robust, hygienic, and efficient drainage in commercial and industrial environments where sheet vinyl flooring is used. Their design ensures reliable water management, debris interception, and seamless integration with vinyl floors, supporting safety and regulatory compliance.

SPS vinyl floor wastes are specialised drainage solutions designed primarily for wet areas finished with sheet vinyl flooring. Their primary purposes are:

  • Efficient drainage: They remove surface water, prevent pooling, and maintain dry, safe floor conditions. They are critical in commercial kitchens, healthcare facilities, food preparation areas, and other high-traffic wet zones.
  • Seamless Integration with Vinyl Flooring: SPS vinyl floor wastes are designed to clamp and seal sheet vinyl securely, ensuring a watertight finish that prevents leaks and protects subfloor structures.
  • Debris Interception: Many SPS vinyl floor wastes incorporate basket or strainer systems that intercept and contain solid debris such as food particles and rubbish. This prevents blockages further down the drainage system and is particularly important in trade waste environments like restaurants and food factories.
  • Maintaining Hygiene: By preventing water accumulation and trapping debris, these floor wastes help maintain a hygienic and easy-to-clean environment, reducing odour and contamination risks.

SPS vinyl floor wastes are widely used in the following settings:

  • Healthcare Facilities: Hygiene, slip resistance, and seamless finishes are essential.
  • Public Amenities and High-Traffic Wet Areas: Such as bathrooms, changing rooms, and bars, where efficient drainage and safety are priorities.
  • Commercial Kitchens and Food Processing Facilities: To intercept food waste and maintain compliance with trade waste regulations.
  • Refuse Rooms and Industrial Environments: To manage liquid and solid waste runoff.

Applications and Installation

  • Material Options: Available in ABS, stainless steel (304/316), brass, and other corrosion-resistant materials for durability in harsh environments.
  • Compatibility: Designed to fit a range of pipe materials, including PVC, copper, cast iron, and HDPE, using O-ring seals for a secure connection.
  • Vinyl Clamping Mechanism: A clamping ring secures the sheet vinyl into the grate assembly, ensuring a watertight seal and compatibility with professional vinyl flooring installations.
  • Height-adjustable design: This feature allows for the precise alignment of the drain with the finished floor, which prevents water from pooling around the drain. This supports both hygiene and slip-resistance requirements in environments like kitchens and healthcare facilities.
  • Use of Puddle Flange fittings: Certain SPS vinyl floor wastes are fitted with a puddle flange, which creates a watertight seal around the pipe penetration, preventing water ingress and protecting the subfloor and structure from water damage.
  • The SPS retrofit design allows the floor waste to be installed in existing floors where a puddle flange was not included initially, making it ideal for renovations, repairs, or upgrades without major works.

Product Size

SPS vinyl floor wastes are compatible with various pipe materials and configurations, supporting compliance across diverse building types and layouts.

  • Pipe Suitability: 50mm, 80mm, 100mm, 150mm
  • Grate Size: 112mm, 117mm, 125, 135mm, 220mm
  • Spigot and O-ring design (100mm & 150mm) allows for compatibility with PVC, HDPE, cast iron and copper pipe.
Limitations on Use
  • Poor installation – Cutting the vinyl too tightly or loosely around the drain may cause uneven surfaces or water pooling
  • If the vinyl is not flush with the drain or the floor slope is incorrect, water may pool instead of draining effectively. This can damage vinyl and create hygiene issues.
  • Vinyl can be prone to damage from use or improper cleaning, especially in high-traffic areas like drains.

Installation Requirements

  • Ensure the subfloor is clean, level and dry.
  • Select the appropriate vinyl floor waste assembly, such as those featuring integrated clamp rings and/or puddle flanges to ensure a watertight seal.
  • Make a template of the drain area. Place it over the drain and trace or tap around the edges to create an indentation for precise marking.
  • Transfer these measurements onto your vinyl sheet. Align the template with the marks on the vinyl flooring.
  • Use a jigsaw or utility knife to cut out the shape of the drain opening from the vinyl flooring, following the template closely. A heat gun, used by a trained applicator, can soften stiff vinyl, making it easier to shape and fit around drains.
  • Place the cut vinyl over the drain to ensure it fits snugly without gaps or overlaps. Using more vinyl is fine, as trimming can refine the fit.
  • Apply adhesive to secure the vinyl around the drain and seal the edges to prevent water from seeping. Secure the vinyl over any internal screws and use a strong glue at the top or within the screw holes to ensure moisture cannot penetrate past the screws.
  • Ensure all installation work complies with the requirements of the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act 2006 and all relevant standards.
  • Refer to the product datasheet

Maintenance & Preventative Measures

  • Remove debris from the grate with regular cleaning to prevent clogs. Biological cleaning products should be used for hygiene and to reduce the potential of damage to the grate surface.
  • Periodically check for damage or wear and tear to the clamping system and ensure a watertight seal remains intact.
  • Replace worn-out components, such as grates or seals.
  • Where applicable, use a strainer to prevent debris, such as hair or dirt, from entering the system.
  • Ensure the adhesives used during installation are moisture resistant and properly cured.
  • Use quality vinyl-specific floor wastes, such as those with integrated clamping rings.
  • Ensure a proper floor slope so that water flows efficiently into the drain.
  • Regularly clean the drain cover and the surrounding area to prevent debris buildup and the build up of harmful chemicals.
  • Check for any signs of water pooling or leakage and address them promptly.
Statement of Building Code Compliance

SPS vinyl floor wastes fully comply with NZBC Clause G13 and the relevant New Zealand and Australian standards by providing safe, maintainable, and effective drainage solutions that prevent leaks, blockages, and odours while facilitating easy maintenance and long-term durability. Compliance is ensured through correct product selection, installation, and adherence to manufacturer guidelines.

SPS vinyl floor wastes are engineered to meet the New Zealand Building Code (NZBC) Clause G13 (Foul Water) requirements and the corresponding Australian standards, including AS/NZS 3500.2.2. These standards set out the objectives, functional requirements, and performance criteria for plumbing and drainage systems to ensure safe and effective management of foul water in buildings.

  • SPS vinyl floor wastes are designed to efficiently channel foul water from wet areas to the central drainage system, as required by G13.2 and G13.3.1(a), minimising the risk of leaks, blockages, and foul odours.
  • The inclusion of removable strainers and basket traps intercepts solid debris (such as food particles), preventing blockages and facilitating easy maintenance, directly supporting G13.3.1(b) and G13.3.2(b).
  • Properly installed SPS floor wastes, when connected to water-sealed traps, prevent foul air and gases from entering occupied spaces, meeting G13.3.1(c).
  • The design allows straightforward removal and cleaning of strainers and baskets, ensuring reasonable access for maintenance and clearing blockages as required by G13.3.1(d).
  • SPS products are constructed from robust materials (such as 316-grade stainless steel). They are Watermark Certified, confirming their suitability for use in regulated environments and their compliance with AS/NZS 3500.2.2 and NZBC G13/AS1.

Note: Compliance is contingent upon correct selection of the drain outlet size, the number of outlet drains provided for use, and the correct installation process.
