Architectural Homes Climate Control — AIRSTAGE™ VRF
Description

Airstage VRF systems provide the ultimate climate control solution for high-end residential and architectural projects, blending seamless design with whisper-quiet performance. Engineered for precision and efficiency, these systems deliver bespoke comfort across multiple zones without compromising the home's aesthetic.

VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) is a system that allows for independent temperature control in every room, powered by a single, high-capacity outdoor unit. It allows installation flexibility to meet the unique size and application needs of any project specification. Prioritising efficiency and performance, VRF systems are carefully designed to cater to a wide range of heating or cooling demands.

VRF is specifically designed for large-scale luxury builds and architectural homes that require flexible installation (long pipe runs and various indoor unit styles), energy-saving performance, and a minimal visual footprint.

What differentiates this solution?

  • Low carbon, low energy, operational flexibility (cooling upstairs whilst heating downstairs)
  • Flexibility of unit placement
  • Reduction in number of units
  • Small dimension pipes to reduce depth of mid-floors & ceiling cavities
Key Features

The system features high-grade industrial components, including high-efficiency DC twin-rotary compressors and corrosion-resistant heat exchangers, all housed in a durable, weather-protected chassis designed for New Zealand conditions.

  • Architectural Integration: Ultra-compact outdoor units (under 1m high for J-IVS) designed to fit discreetly behind balcony railings or in narrow side-passages.
  • Whisper-Quiet Performance: Includes a dedicated 'Low Noise Mode' to ensure compliance with strict residential noise boundaries and a peaceful home environment.
  • Superior Design Flexibility: Industry-leading piping lengths (up to 400m–1000m total) allow outdoor units to be hidden away on rooftops or remote plant areas, far from living spaces.
  • Simultaneous Comfort: Heat Recovery (VR-II) options allow for simultaneous heating and cooling in different rooms — perfect for homes with large glass facades and varying sun exposure.
  • Smart Home Ready: Seamlessly integrates with premium home automation systems via KNX, Modbus, or BACnet, and anywAiR iO® which is GENERAL's Wi-Fi and Internet of Things (IoT) brand, offering advanced control solutions to the market. Built for NZ Conditions: Features 'Blue Fin' anti-corrosion coating on heat exchangers as standard, providing essential protection for coastal residential environments.

Scope of Use

Intended Purpose & Placement Airstage VRF systems are designed to provide high-efficiency, multi-zone climate control (heating and cooling) for both new builds and major retrofits. The system is engineered for maximum architectural flexibility:

  • Indoor Units: Can be integrated into interior walls (high-wall units), concealed within ceiling voids (bulkhead and ducted units), or positioned at floor level (floor consoles) to suit any interior design requirement.
  • Outdoor Units: Designed for exterior installation on rooftops, balconies, or ground-level plant areas. The compact footprint of the J-Series is specifically intended for locations with restricted space or strict visual amenity requirements.

Intended Applications:

In additional to high-end residential applications, the Airstage VRF range is versatile enough for the following sectors:

  • Residential: Luxury bespoke homes, multi-unit premium apartments, and townhouses.
  • Commercial & Retail: High-end showrooms, boutique retail outlets, and open-plan office fit-outs.
  • Educational: School blocks, university libraries, and lecture theatres requiring quiet, multi-room control.
  • Hospitality: Boutique hotels, restaurants, and wellness centres.
  • Healthcare: Medical suites and consultation rooms where individual zone control is critical.
Limitations on Use
  • Refrigerant Safety (AS/NZS 5149): In accordance with AS/NZS 5149, specific safety measures (such as leak detection sensors or ventilation duct) may be required if the system is installed in very small, enclosed rooms (e.g., bedrooms under 15m²) where a refrigerant leak could exceed safe concentration limits.
  • Piping Thresholds: While Airstage VRF offers high piping flexibility, installations must remain within the maximum allowable pipe lengths and vertical height differences to ensure proper oil return, rated capacity, and long-term reliability.
  • Environmental Constraints (Coastal): For projects located within 500m of the coast or in high-salt-spray zones, additional anti-corrosion treatments (beyond the standard Blue Fin protection) may be recommended to ensure the longevity of the heat exchanger.
  • Operating Temperature Range: The system is designed to operate in ambient outdoor temperatures between -10°C to 46°C for cooling and -20°C to 21°C for heating. Performance may be derated if the project location consistently exceeds these extremes.
  • Acoustic Requirements: While 'Low Noise' modes are available, outdoor units must be positioned in compliance with local council boundary noise regulations, particularly in high-density residential zones.
  • Maintenance Access: Units must be installed with the minimum manufacturer-specified clearances (typically 1000mm at the front of the outdoor unit) to allow for safe service access and adequate airflow.
