Viking CertainTeed Shingles: A Lightweight Roofing System

All of Viking Roofspec's CertainTeed asphalt shingles range (20 year warranty through to 50 year warranty) can now be regarded as a lightweight roofing system when used in conjunction with the Viking SuperStrand Sarking substrate.

This is achieved through the performance and structural integrity of the wide-spanning 16.3mm thick Strand Sarking, which even when installed with the thickest shingles, performs equal to a lightweight roof.

Item 7.3 of the Strandsarking BRANZ Appraisal 891 states:

"Roof systems incorporating Strand Sarking weighing up to 25kg/m² may be considered as a Light Roof for design in accordance with NZS 3604."

SuperStrand Sarking is a strand board specifically designed as a substrate for asphalt shingles in New Zealand, and it offers a number of advantages. It is H3.1 treated, exceeding the minimum requirement. It does not require a tongue and groove edge, making it faster to install, and with a 3.6m long sheet, it provides a more pristine finish.

Asphalt shingles are individual bituminous sheets (usually 915mm long), nailed on top of a timber-sarked roof substrate with either a layer of bitumen felt or self-adhering membrane in-between.

Viking CertainTeed Asphalt Roofing Shingles have been appraised as a roof cladding for buildings within the following scope:

The scope limitations of NZBC Acceptable Solution E2/AS1, paragraph 1.1, with regard to floor plan area and building height; and,
Constructed with timber roof framing and sheathing complying with the NZBC; and,
Where the roof slope is 9 degrees or greater for plywood and 10 degrees or greater for Strandsarking; and,
Situated in NZS 3604 Wind Zones up to and including High, or Extra High for the Landmark Series, Hatteras and Independence shingles only.

Clause B1 STRUCTURE: Performance B1.3.1, B1.3.2, B1.3.3 and B1.3.4. Viking CertainTeed Asphalt Roofing Shingles meet the requirements for loads arising from self-weight, gravity loads, temperature, snow, wind, impact and creep [i.e. B1.3.3 (a), (b), (c), (g), (h), (j) and (q)].
