Insulwool (Rockwool) is a smart insulation choice for projects demanding exceptional acoustic performance and enhanced fire safety. Its non-combustible nature makes it a reliable solution in meeting NZBC requirements, while its superior sound-absorbing properties help create quieter, more comfortable interior environments. It is perfect for use in residential and commercial developments, particularly in high-density urban areas where managing noise is essential.
The Building Agency recently undertook testing on Insulwool (Rockwool), a high-performance acoustic insulation material evaluated using ISO 354:2003, an international standard that specifies a method for measuring the sound absorption properties of materials in a reverberation room.
The ISO 354 Acoustic Sound Absorption test was conducted at the University of Auckland testing facility. The floor was laid with 10.27m² of Insulwool in the reverberation chamber, where a rotating vane diffuser on the roof directed both air and sound onto the insulation. The sound absorption coefficient was calculated based on changes in the room's reverberation time. A NRC of 0.85 was achieved.
The results indicated a high rate of sound absorption in the 100kg/m³ Insulwool insulation which makes Insulwool an ideal acoustic solution for multi-tenanted buildings where reducing noise levels and fire performance are critical in any project design.
This procedure is crucial for assessing the effectiveness of acoustic treatments such as wall and ceiling panels, as well as the equivalent sound absorption area of objects like furniture or space absorbers. By determining the sound absorption coefficient, ISO 354 provides valuable data for optimising acoustics in various environments.
