FSC-Certified Quartersawn KeyDeck Specified for Golf Club

The Arikikapakapa golf club in Rotorua features the FSC-certified KeyDeck decking and Camo hidden fixing system. The quartersawn boards are more stable and straight-grained than standard pine decking — and they’re arsenic- and chrome-free. Factory-applied oils and pigments protect the boards in the first year of weathering, setting them up for a longer life.

The new deck provides outdoor entertaining space for up to 100 members, as part of the club’s food and beverage service. While the club’s manager, Brett Marvelly, had no preconceived products, he said Keyland’s KeyDeck, with hidden fasteners, took the typical deck concept to another level.

Made from boards of New Zealand pine from FSC-certified forests, KeyDeck is quartersawn, delivering a straight grain with no knots and excellent stability. The appearance is further enhanced by Camo Edge Deck Fasteners, in which screws are positioned at 45° and drilled via the edges using a Camo guide. The clean look raises the whole deck aesthetic and avoids the clutter and trip hazard when nails work themselves loose. It handles a high volume of foot traffic, and so is suitable for public projects.

"The builders were rapt with the product. Clear timber, no defects and very little wastage," says Marvelly. "It was very easy for the guys to put it together once they understood the process."

KeyDeck timber is treated with a chrome and arsenic-free product and a factory-applied natural tung oil and colour that goes deep into the grain, protecting the wood from warping during the critical first year of weathering.

Since the deck was installed at Arikikapakapa, 18 months ago, Brett says there has been no sun damage and it looks as good today as the day it was completed.

"I highly recommend this product for anyone who is looking for something special. And with the impact of COVID-19, the KeyDeck has put us ahead of the game in terms of members being able to socialise safely outside. Once we get the new umbrellas up, it will be even better."
