Four sectors of commercial construction valued at over $1 Billion

With the continued growth of school construction, we have factories and warehouses being joined by health, making up nearly 60% of total commercial construction. The rapid growth of ecommerce and supply chain disruptions are driving the need for larger warehouse space and manufacturing capability. Non-residential building consents totalled $8.2 billion, up 16% from the year ended January 2021.

  • Education buildings at $1.4 billion (up 8.1%)
  • Factories at $1.3 billion (up 53%)
  • Storage buildings at $1.1 billion (up 1.8%)
  • Health buildings at $1.04 (up over 90%)

On the residential front, consents remain at over 48,000 for the year, with 2,888 new dwellings consented in January, 46% of which were townhouses, flats and apartments.

For a full summary of January's building consents please read the release from NZ Stats.
