Resene Reduces Operational Carbon Emissions by 22% in Four Years

After months of technical review and auditing, we are pleased to announce that our total organisational emissions are now 22% lower than in our first year of measurement.

Four years ago, Resene became a Toitū carbonreduce certified organisation. Since then, we’ve developed a custom in-house carbon emissions monitoring model and undertaken projects across the business to reduce our footprint. Importantly, this 22% reduction reflects emissions we have actively reduced, rather than offset through carbon credits.

Our emissions are measured and managed in line with international standards and independently audited each year as part of our Toitū carbonreduce certification. We track almost all emissions associated with our operations, including areas beyond our direct control.

That means measuring fuel used by our vehicle fleet, which is transitioning to hybrid; electricity and gas across our ColorShops and manufacturing sites; and the transport of raw materials and finished products. Our teams have improved transport routes and bulk material storage, while developing circular reuse models for packaging and pallets.

We also track waste and recycling, flights and taxi travel, air-conditioning maintenance, and even the paper used for fan decks and colour charts. By questioning how we work and investing in improvements, we’ve been able to cut emissions while growing the business, often improving operations and customer outcomes at the same time.

Supplier and operational data feeds directly into our emissions model, allowing us to analyse results by time, location and emissions type, test potential projects and track targets. In our first year, compiling this data took around 900 hours. Today, the process is largely automated.

Transport partners remain our single largest emissions category, making collaboration with suppliers especially important. Increasingly, we can use audited and accredited carbon data provided directly by suppliers, improving the accuracy of our measurement.

Our progress reflects a broader shift we’re seeing across industry: businesses working together, sharing better information and finding practical ways to reduce environmental impacts. Reaching a 22% reduction sooner than expected is an important milestone — and a strong foundation for what comes next.
