Why Clear Specification Sheets are Essential for Effective Paint Projects

Painting a building, whether it be a new build or a repaint, demands careful planning and execution. One key aspect of the planning stage is the creation of a clear and concise specification sheet that outlines the paint system and finish requirements for the project. Simon Blincoe, the National Specification Manager at Dulux, explains why specification sheets are crucial for successful paint projects and how Dulux could assist specifiers in writing them.

What is a specification sheet?

A specification sheet is a written document that forms part of the project documentation package. It provides comprehensive details of the paint system, including the product, application process, and finish requirements. While the visual plan shows the colours to be used, the written specification sheet explains what cannot be shown visually.

Why is a specification sheet important?

The specification sheet is paramount to ensuring that the paint project is completed to the desired standard. Without a clear understanding of the paint system and finish requirements, the project may not end up with the desired result. It sets the expectation for the desired finish of the project and can be referred to if there is an issue with the paint after the project is completed.

What does a specification sheet include?

A specification sheet includes a detailed description of the paint system, such as the product, application process, and finish requirements. It references the industry standard, such as ASNZS23/11, which is the guide to the painting of buildings and is well recognised as a standard for the painting industry. It also specifies the applicator credentials, such as a Dulux Accredited Painter or a Porter's Paints Guild Member.

How can a specification sheet be used in the tendering or pricing process?

A specification sheet is useful in the tendering or pricing process as it provides a concise description of what the painter will be covering. It enables painters to accurately price the job and ensures that everyone is pricing it to the same level. This means that the evaluation process is fair, and the job is not awarded to the painter who has not included all aspects of the project in their quote.

How can Dulux assist with specification sheets?

For new builds, the most used specification platform is Masterspec, which allows the architect or designer to compile product information across the entire project. For re-paint projects, Dulux uses its own specification system called DuSpec, and has recently introduced the improved Duspec+. Dulux BIM specification tool Duspec+ is ideal for re-paints and enables painters to accurately price the job.

A clear and concise specification sheet is essential to ensure that a paint project is completed to the desired standard. It provides comprehensive details of the paint system and finish requirements and can be used in the tendering or pricing process to ensure a fair evaluation. With the assistance of Dulux and its specification systems, painters can accurately price the job and ensure that everyone is pricing it to the same level.
