Proofex Engage Waterproof Membrane System
Description

Proofex Engage is a pre-applied waterproofing and gas-proofing membrane for below-ground concrete structures including basement walls and including basement walls and foundations. It is a multi-layered composite sheet comprising a cell mesh bonded to a blended polyethylene/polypropylene membrane; concrete poured against the sheet interlocks with the mesh to form a mechanical bond. The membrane provides water, water vapour and gas protection to water-excluding structures and protects concrete from aggressive ground salts, chemicals and hydrocarbons.

The membrane is laid beneath floor slabs and foundations and applied to the exterior face of basement retaining walls, either against temporary shuttering or against existing structures.

Rolls are 4–5 mm thick, 1.27m wide and 30m long, covering 38.1m² at 1.54 kg/m², with a self-adhesive selvedge along one side of the roll giving a 65mm sealed lap. A range of auxiliary components supports detailing, including Proofex Engage Detail Strip, pre-formed corner pieces, Proofex "L" Section, top hats for service penetrations, and Proofex Sheetdrain 81 drainage layer.

Key Features
  • Pre-applied membrane system — applied before any steel reinforcing or concrete is poured
  • Heavy duty design means that it can handle the rigors of site traffic without damage
  • Modular installation allows for large coverage to be applied in a single day
  • Simple and quick to install, with no protection film to remove — Selve edge (self-adhesive joins) along the rolls length in conjunction with L Section and Butt Joint componentry allows for fast install
  • BRANZ Appraised system
  • Full range of detailed drawings available
  • Unique mesh system bonds permanently to concrete, remaining in place even if settlement takes place
  • Smart anti-tracking design prevents water tracking between membrane and concrete
  • Basement waterproofing protection to grades 1, 2 and 3 as defined in BS 8102:2022
  • Methane and CO2 protection as defined in BRE Report 212
  • Radon protection as defined in BRE Report 211
Scope of Use

Proofex Engage is intended for below-ground concrete structures on new build projects, including basement walls and foundations, lift pits and carparks, typically in commercial and multi-storey construction where tanking to BS 8102 grades 1 to 3 is required.

It also suits sites requiring methane, carbon dioxide or radon protection, or where ground conditions contain aggressive salts, chemicals or hydrocarbons.

Proofex Engage has been appraised by BRANZ as DPMs for use:

  • on buildings subject to non-specific design under floor slabs complying with NZS 3604 and behind concrete masonry basement walls and under floor slabs complying with NZS 4229; and,
  • in buildings subject to specific design with substrates of in-situ or precast concrete complying with NZS 3101 or concrete masonry complying with NZS 4230 and NZS 4210; and,
  • where subsoil drainage and free draining granular backfill has been placed behind basement walls.

Proofex Engage has been appraised as a tanking membrane for use:

  • on buildings subject to specific design with substrates of in-situ or precast concrete complying with NZS 3101; and,
  • where the membrane is subject to hydrostatic pressure with the pressure not to exceed 2 bar (20m head of water).

Limitations on Use
  • Must be adequately protected against damage during backfilling and in service.
  • Must be installed by a Fosroc preferred/registered applicator under a quality assurance regime
Statement of Building Code Compliance

In the opinion of BRANZ, Proofex Engage if designed, used, installed and maintained in accordance with the statements and conditions of Appraisal 1035, will meet the following provisions of the NZBC:

  • Clause B2 DURABILITY: Performance B2.3.1 (a) not less than 50 years. Proofex Engage meets this requirement.
  • Clause E2 EXTERNAL MOISTURE: Performance E2.3.3. Proofex Engage meets this requirement.
  • Clause F2 HAZARDOUS BUILDING MATERIALS: Performance F2.3.1. Proofex Engage meets this requirement.

Contributions to Compliance:

  • B2.3.1(a): Proofex Engage has a serviceable life of not less than 50 years when installed and maintained in accordance with the Appraisal and continually protected from sunlight and UV radiation.
  • E2.3.3: Proofex Engage prevents the penetration of water that could cause undue dampness or damage to building elements, with a vapour flow resistance of not less than 90 MN s/g and a tanking capability up to a maximum hydrostatic pressure of 2 bar (20m head of water).
  • F2.3.1: Proofex Engage is not classified as hazardous under the criteria of EPA New Zealand GHS 7 and does not present a health hazard in normal use.
In-Service History

Proofex Engage has been in use since 1999. It has been specified in a range of civil, commercial, and residential projects.
