Achieving slip resistance compliance without design compromise

Slip resistance is a critical consideration in modern architectural design, particularly across pedestrian circulation areas, wet zones and public access routes. However, achieving compliant slip ratings can be challenging where project designs call for smooth porcelain tiles, natural stone, polished concrete or other visually refined flooring finishes.

Slip resistance performance in New Zealand is assessed in accordance with NZS 4586:2004 – Slip Resistance Classification of New Pedestrian Surface Materials, supporting the safety performance requirements of NZBC D1 Access Routes. Surfaces that perform adequately in dry conditions often require higher wet pendulum classifications when extended into bathrooms, entries, ramps or transition zones.

Historically, this has forced designers to introduce alternative textured finishes in isolated areas — interrupting flooring continuity and altering the original design intent.
