Achieve Sweeping Curves with a Seamless Look with Bendywood

Bendywood is a range of solid timber from Italy that has a remarkable ability to be bent to a radius of down to 10 times its thickness, e.g. 20mm thick Bendywood can be bent down to a 200mm radius as a solid piece of timber, without the use of steam or lamination. Or, as the Italians say, “Legno massiccio piegabile senza vapore”.

The main advantages of Bendywood are that it enables the bending of solid timber with a superior finish highlighting the natural beauty of the timber, it is free of glue lines and saves time and in turn, cost.

This innovative technology enables curves and sculptural forms to be achieved in wood where previously labour intensive traditional methods of steaming and lamination would have been used, or where previously such curves might not have even been considered feasible in wood.

Bendywood undergoes a proprietary thermo-mechanical process in Italy that treats the timber without chemicals to become more pliable. It can still be machined like any other timber but has the unique ability to be easily bent. Similarly, it can be stained, clear coat or wax finished.

Bendywood has a wide range of uses including curved handrails, furniture and sculptural works.

Bendywood is available in a range of European and North American timbers including oak, ash, beech, cherry, maple and walnut, either plain blanks or a range of dressed profiles.

Woodform is the Australasian distributor of Bendywood and it has been successfully used in a number of recent local spiral staircase projects, including a 120m spiral stair handrail at Smales Farm, Auckland.

When designing the atrium at the B:HIVE, Smales Farm, architects Jasmax looked for products that could help achieve a clean, seamless aesthetic. “Each floor is a different shape and configuration,” explained Project Architect, Cameron Pollock. “We had to have a high level of accuracy and capability to achieve the finished results.”

“We’ve received a lot of great feedback,” says Cameron. “We’re incredibly pleased.”

The project was recently awarded the Supreme Award and Workplace (over 1000m²) Award at the Interior Awards 2019.
