Woodform Achieves Stylish Design With Technology

Auckland’s Jellicoe Wharf features 123 new bench seats which are five, eight or 22 metres in length and made of 190mm-square, solid Purple Heart. Wood specialist Woodform was commissioned by the Auckland City Council to construct them.

The weight and lengths of the wood meant handling, cutting and drilling the wood to perfection was a difficult job.

A five-metre length of wood was 200kg, and each five-metre seat is made up of three of these.

Woodform’s team designed a specialised handling system to cut the lengths of wood and drill the 4000 holes required to bolt the pieces together. The machinery has an operating accuracy of +/- 1mm.

Purple Heart suits the purpose here. These seats will stand up to the weather and whatever else is thrown at them for a very long time.
