Woodform recently manufactured curved hardwood seating for the new $4.1million Royal Reserve Playground in Massey, Auckland. Designed for a broad age range and with the added feature of learn-to-ride bike tracks, it was important that ample seating was provided for the space.
With exposure to weather, risk of vandalism and everyday wear and tear from rambunctious playground visitors, the seating needed to have excellent durability, while also fitting into the overall playground design.
Woodform made 13 curved timber seats in differing sizes, measuring from 2.0m to 3.6m long. Each seat was made to measure with a stainless steel frame designed to be mounted onto a concrete plinth. The seats were manufactured in curved rosewood, a durable hardwood with a warm natural finish.
Harald Decker, MD of Decker Landscapes Limited worked with Woodform on the installation of the seats into recesses of the playground’s concrete walls and banks. The process went smoothly — a testament to the collaboration between Decker Landscapes, Woodform and the designer. “It was very easy,” says Harald. “Woodform were very accommodating and a joy to work with. The result is really good. It speaks for itself.”
The smooth integration of the seating, recessed into the concrete banks provides a step up from standard park benches, while the curve of the timber echoes curves in playground equipment and bike tracks for an integrated look. “The execution of the work was really top standard,” says Harald.
