Lightweight Brick-Look Cladding Resolves Weight Challenges for Heritage Reclad

Located on a heritage-listed site on Symonds Street in Central Auckland, this project features two three-storey buildings with retail on the ground floor and apartments above, plus a commercial car park below. A demolition and rebuild was required, with a unique challenge arising when it came to specifying the cladding.

Brick cladding was required by Council to maintain the building’s heritage character on the ground floor, however, a lightweight cladding was critical to ensuring the car park could remain open and accessible during the build. The design team needed a creative solution to satisfy both these requirements, ultimately finding the answer in State of Clad’s Cemintel Territory Quarry Mottled Rustic Brick cladding.

Cemintel Territory is a cavity walling system featuring cement-based panels in a range of concrete, stone and brick inspired finishes. The lightweight system was the perfect option for reducing weight without compromising on the aesthetic, and was supplied in custom one-tonne pallets carefully allocated on the podium to further manage weight on site.

Discussion between the architects, State of Clad and Council led to the Cemintel Territory Quarry Mottled Rustic Brick option being specified — a finish that recreates the look of terracotta brick. The durability and natural brick appearance of the cladding was ideal for the mixed-use building.

“Cemintel Territory Quarry Mottled Rustic Brick is a very realistic brick-look product — so much so that many people who are familiar with this job don’t realise it’s not a real brick,” says Mitch Ingram, State of Clad. “It’s a high-quality, long-lasting option, and has the added benefit of opening up the designers’ ability to use more space as it is slimmer than standard brick.”

A low maintenance cladding for commercial and residential buildings, the Cemintel Territory panels also feature a self-cleaning protective coating which helps to clean the panels with each rainfall, and a UV coating which protects from fading for thirty years. “With Cemintel Territory you’re not going to get discoloration or issues with efflorescence that you can get with brick,” says Mitch.

The durability of the system is backed by a CodeMark certificate, giving architects and Councils added confidence, and simplifying the consent process. “We worked with the lead architect on this project from the very beginning. The CodeMark certification made it a lot easier to work with Council as there were fewer questions which sped up the process,” says Mitch.

Installation went smoothly with the State of Clad team offering support on site to ensure correct installation. This support offered right through the design and construction process demonstrates State of Clad’s dedication to helping architects and builders. “We’re a company that will be there from the first enquiry until long after the job is finished,” says Mitch.

The end result is a stunning and realistic brick-look façade that preserves the heritage character of the building. “It looks absolutely fantastic,” says Mitch. “Unless you very closely inspect it, you wouldn't have a clue that it’s not brick.”

The low maintenance finish of State of Clad’s Cemintel Territory cladding system will ensure the building performs well and looks good for years to come. “Four years on, it still looks as good today as the day it went up. That’s a testament to the quality of the manufacture of the product,” says Mitch. “Giving peace of mind to people is the biggest security you can get in building and that’s what I believe State of Clad offers.”
