Protect Timber Buildings with Fireshield from Resene

When looking for an intumescent coating for timber, Fireshield has clear and pigmented systems to suit different projects. Choose from Fireshield 1FR (clear) or Fireshield 2FR (pigmented) system, both best spray applied in a single coat. Fireshield 1FR must be topcoated with 1FR TOPcoat to protect it from moisture and wear, while Fireshield 2FR may be topcoated with Resene SpaceCote in a choice of Resene colours.

Two Christchurch projects both enjoy the benefits of Fireshield:

Bealey Hotel, Christchurch

The two-storey, 300 bed, Bealey Hotel has a mix of accommodation, from ensuite rooms to bunkrooms, with kitchen and lounge facilities, and car and bus parking. It replaces a three storey lodge that was damaged by the Christchurch earthquakes.

CLT panels were chosen as a time-efficient option to keep the build moving at speed, giving early access for the finishing trades.

The inspiration to expose the timber structure was threatened by the cost of coating it to achieve a Group 1-S rating. Estimates were coming in at a similar metre square rate to the CLT panel itself. The fire engineer working on the project had helped develop a timber intumescent product back in Sweden some twenty years ago. Suddenly with the new MBIE guidance, there was a compliant, cost-effective product that would work. Pallets of Fireshield were flown in and used to coat almost every surface in the lodge to achieve the required surface finish.

This was joined by plasterboard ceilings throughout in Resene Quarter Black White (greyed white) and colour accents in Resene Eighth Stonehenge (muted grey), Resene Quarter Sandstone (stone sand), Resene Powder Blue (antiqued steel blue), Resene Awash (mid blue), Resene Rice Paper (sherbet green) and Resene Bouquet (lilac rose) teamed with Resene Black White (grey white).

Papanui Club, Christchurch

RM Designs also applied their expertise to Papanui Club in Christchurch, a 2,900m² club with facilities that other clubs could only dream of.

As well as a colourful palette of Resene colours, this building is well protected, from the Resene paint finishes on the wall to the Fireshield protection. Fireshield FR 1 is used over plywood wall lining and timber veneered acoustic ceiling panels throughout to provide fire protection.
