Opulence Abounds for Restroom Amenities in New Sylvia Park Extension

With an extra 19,000m² added to an already impressive retail footprint, there’s no doubt Sylvia Park is one of the most renowned shopping destinations in Auckland — if not New Zealand — which is why the Mico Design team knew they had to create something extraordinary for the new restroom facilities. And the result didn’t disappoint.

Architects for the project, The Buchan Group, engaged the services of Mico Design with initial sketch concepts, including a design intent that was looking to achieve a glamorous, ‘boutique hotel’ look and finish. It also included the concept of individual ‘workstations’ where people could have their own washroom experience, alongside a common beauty counter in the female bathrooms.

Completed in October 2020, the overall layout and design of the back-to-back workstations, with back-lit mirrors and large over-height doors for the toilet spaces and beauty counter has certainly delivered a feeling of opulence and indulgence — which is what makes this project so unique. Typically shopping centre bathrooms are designed to be practical and functional, as they experience high traffic and usage. So the fact that these amenities incorporate such a high level of luxury makes them quite exceptional.

Using a combination of Kohler basins, Caroma toilets, Robertson tapware and Dolphin accessories, there is also a very subtle difference between the male and female bathrooms with a square ‘masculine’ basin for the men’s washroom, and a round basin with softer curves for the women’s. The gooseneck infrared taps, which have a WELS 6 Star for water-saving, are at the cutting edge of bathroom design and technology, alongside the bulk feed soap dispensers which fill six dispensers at once — instead of individual refilling.

A fully-equipped parent room comes with private rooms for feeding, a play space and a parent/child bathroom which includes junior suites to provide a welcoming, family-friendly feeling.

Stylish and luxurious, the fixtures and fittings in the new Sylvia Park bathrooms mirror The Terrace’s simple, calm and elegant interior finish, ultimately achieved through a careful selection of each product’s form and function.
