Environmentally Responsible Roofing with Metrotile

As a roofing manufacturer, Metrotile is always looking for ways to minimise its environmental impact. The Company takes environmental responsibilities seriously and focuses on operation activities to improve energy efficiency and sustainability in the building industry. The latest technology is also used to ensure that the company's carbon footprint is reduced and that environmentally preferable products are used wherever possible.

Metal Roof

A metal tile roof is lighter than a concrete or clay tile roof, more durable than an asphalt shingle roof, and easier to handle than long-run corrugate sheets. Available in a range of designs and styles, Metrotile's reliable metal roofing system also requires less timber framing and less fuel during transportation compared to heavy weight roofs, making it a cost-effective option with a low carbon footprint.

The base steel for Metrotile's roofing tiles originates from the purest ironsand (blacksands) from rock breakdown on the Taranaki coast some 2.5 million years ago. This ironsand is the key ingredient in the production of high quality steel. The ironsand is refined to produce one of the purest forms of steel around the world, delivering a superior base component for tile manufacture.

New Zealand Steel is the country's sole steel producer, operating a fully integrated steel mill at Glenbrook. Using locally sourced ironsand, NZ Steel manufactures a range of flat steel products for the building. The company has also received a 'tick' from Environmental Choice New Zealand.

Natural New Zealand stone granules are the foundation for the long term colour retention on all Metrotile textured roofs. There are four main stone variants that singularly or combined offer over 20 natural roof colours. As all base stone granules used are natural, formed over millions of years, they will retain this natural pigment and coloration for centuries to come.

Steel is one of the most recycled materials in the world and is considered a sustainable material by the sustainable building industry. Metrotile recycles steel scrap including off-cuts to minimise the impact on the natural environment. The main material of Metrotile's product range is Zincalume coated steel, which is recycled to a very high degree with no loss of quality. These benefits have a huge impact on the overall sustainability of the roofing material.
