Illuminated HI-MACS Surfaces Enhance Vision Studio

Vision Studio is a boutique optometry practice that offers luxury eyewear from a range of international brands including Dior, Bvlgari, DITA, Gucci, MYKITA and Thom Browne. For their flagship store at the Glen Shopping Centre, Melbourne, architects from Studio Edwards worked to create a striking retail area that would reflect the Vision Studio brand.

The 124m² fit-out features a custom-perforated aluminium storefront, textured concrete walls, stone tiling and marble surfaces which together create a modern-industrial aesthetic. Pops of pastels in cabinetry and furniture provide contrast and add warmth to the space. Illuminated HI-MACS shelving draws the eye to the high-fashion glasses on display.

“We wanted a translucent material that gave the impression it was floating whilst also displaying the product,” explains Ben Edwards, Designer and Architect, Studio Edwards. “It was also important that the products were lit without being visually impacted.” To achieve this look, Edwards specified transparent HI-MACS in ruby, sapphire and opal — three pastel tones that match the cabinetry beneath, and lit the shelves from below with recessed LED lighting strips.

The seamless nature of HI-MACS enabled long shelves that seemingly float across the length of the space, and was also key for a bespoke display table at the centre of the store. Custom-designed for Vision Studio, the asymmetrical table in HI-MACS Opal has smooth, seamless edges, with soft pastels incorporated into the design.

Hardwearing and durable, HI-MACS is ideal for retail applications and in the case of Vision Studio gave both the designer and client peace of mind that the surfaces would remain flawless even with the constant scraping of glasses during everyday use. As a non-porous surface, HI-MACS is also extremely hygienic and easy to clean.

The HI-MACS shelving plays a key role in creating flow within the store. “There is an ongoing balance throughout the space, between raw and refined, geometric and linear, private and public,” says Ben. “The HI-MACS shelves have an important role in this as they are seen as floating from the retail space through to the sales counters and optometrist consulting area.”

An integral part of Vision Studio’s sleek new store, both the shelving and centre table demonstrate the design flexibility of HI-MACS and creative eye of architects Studio Edwards.
