Generator NZ is a fast-growing Auckland business that provides co-working and event spaces for thriving businesses. For Generator’s newest location in Britomart Place, workplace designers CPRW designed a sophisticated interior with a range of workspaces and social areas. For bar areas, CPRW worked with manufacturing experts Fodera to create bespoke bar furnishings designed for the two very different spaces.
For the members' lounge and bar, a thermoformed Corian White Onyx bar structure with solid brass inlay takes centre stage, while solid brass glass racks overhead create an eye-catching feature. A black-stained timber slat wall behind the counter adds a sense of proximity to the large back-of-bar area. “It’s all about the contrast,” says Luciano Velocci, Designer, CPRW. “All other elements were served better with a light finish. With the dark colour, the back wall disappears, so the beautiful form of the Corian bar takes centre place.”
Situated in a much smaller private space, the second bar at Generator Britomart Place, with impressive views of Auckland Harbour, required a compact design. To make the bar more approachable, a U-shaped counter was designed, creating three points of contact for customers. Echoing the design of the main bar, the counter features a curved Corian surface with solid brass inlay.
At the back of the bar, rear lightbox cabinets with glass doors and opalescent acrylic interiors brighten the area. A striking ceiling mirror above cleverly conceals an access panel for the aircon system and reflects light into the space. Together these elements have a memorable visual impact. “It’s really beautiful,” says Luciano. “It’s a smaller space and much more intimate than the main bar. Anyone that visits will say ‘wow, this is really beautiful.’”
Fodera’s expertise in working with different materials was key to achieving the designs of both bars. “We used Fodera for their manufacturing and flexibility across a variety of materials,” explains Luciano. “They were able to work with the solid brass and the Corian, the acrylic lacquer finish, and even the stained timber in the main bar. With Fodera you had confidence that all aspects of the bars could be created in one shop instead of having to go to different people.”
