The brief asked for an elegant family home that paid homage to the history of the humble New Zealand bach. Materials and details were chosen carefully to reflect this direction. The living areas of the house were elevated one storey to maximise the views and arranged around two court areas to provide exterior areas sheltered from the wind and maximising the outlook from all areas. The kitchen was integral to the functioning of the living space and provides a pivot point for the family and social use of the three key living areas: lounge, dining, outdoor room.
Corian Solid Surface and Fenix Nano Tech Matt surface were chosen because they perfectly reflected the desire for sophisticated, yet utilitarian materiality. The Fenix colour Nero Ingo, with its delicious matt finish, reminded the design team of the expansive black West Coast sand which is directly in front of the living spaces.
The design of the kitchen used a curated palette which was then used to tie together the various cabinetry elements in the living area, the storage areas in the dining area and the AV cabinet in the living room. The colour and material palette extended to the bathrooms, which used Corian Solid Surface for its seamless application.
The combination of FENIX, Corian Solid Surface and the brass bench upstand elevated the kitchen to a luxe environment while honouring the simplicity of traditional baches.
