NOVEMBER 2008 - your monthly publication for interior & exterior ideas

Welcome to the November 2008 edition of ebossNOW
Featuring ... Behind the Wall

With the economy facing tougher times at the moment, there are still many positives out there in the Building Industry. We see the Department for Building & Housing's (DBH) Request for proposals to create an online Building Consent Application & lodgement process as a major step forward.
As part of their efforts to tackle housing affordability, in the near future you may well have the option of creating and lodging consents electronically. We support this initiative and would like to give you an opportunity to present your thoughts on what would ensure its successful buy in from the Architectural community. We will consolidate all feedback (anonymous of course) and then present to DBH. To give your comments and ideas you can complete the online survey for the Online Building Consent Application and Lodgement Tracking System.
To get an idea of similar systems check out Singapore's CORENET e-PlanCheck System, and Land Division Application System in South Australia.

This month on eboss, we launch the new Technical Manuals from Hafele, Continuous Spouting and Canbrace. Also, Dimond launches its new long run DP955 roofing profile, James Hardie releases Horizon Lining, a new interior lining, and Climate Coatings releases its "create your own element" initiative. We showcase the new Valentino-inspired tiles from Piemme featured at the Cersaie Show in Italy, and Allaporta's new kitset cavity slider door range.

Take a look behind the wall this month - check out Caroma's new Invisi II toilet suites, and the in-wall bracing system from Canbrace.

We received so much feedback on our Confidence Survey, that we are still "crunching" the numbers. We will be publishing the full results in December's ebossNOW.

Finally we are now putting together our programme for 2009, if there is something that you would like to see featured in ebossNOW, email me directly and let me know.

Kind regards
Matthew Duder

Tile Warehouse has the Latest from Cersaie
As the largest ceramic tile tradeshow in the world, Cersaie is the place where design trends for the coming year are forged; manufacturers compete to command the attention of designers and consumers.
Introduced to the NZ market this year, the Valentino inspired range from Piemme, at Cerasie 2008 was the trailblazing design series aptly named Fashion .
Something New on the Horizon from James Hardie
Horizon™ Lining is a prefinished fibre cement sheet that offers a durable substrate, with an appealing finish. Easy to install straight onto framing or over existing linings, Horizon Lining is low maintenance and easily cleaned.
The system simplifies construction by reducing the number of trades used, especially in wet areas - there is no need for substrate because the lining can be installed directly onto framing. Horizon Lining is available in 8 colours, from the vibrant orange of Sunset, to the subdued Day Break and the stylish Silver Mist. Aluminium or colour matched jointers are available, or silicone can be used.
Check out the Horizon colour options using Colour Explorer
Häfele 2008 Architectural Hardware Catalogue
Whether you are involved in interior design, building and construction, architecture, glass and aluminium fabrication or door and window manufacturing, the newly released first edition of The Complete Hafele Architectural Hardware Catalogue is an important reference for innovative Architectural Hardware products and ideas.
New Tempering Valve from Foreno NZ
Foreno NZ has added a Tempering Valve to the Autoflo hands-free range. The valve, called the TV08, can be added to the popular AV0175 unit to produce a tepid temperature of between 40 and 50deg.C. TV08 is certified to the AS4032.2 Australian Standard.

Decorative Board That's Matched To Any Colour
Create Your Own Element® from Climate Coatings is an ideal alternative to two-pot lacquer finishes on MDF, that have been specified because of colour, and is also a great solution to deleted Laminate colours. Element® is lower cost than lacquer, more durable, is a zero VOC finish and available on E-Zero board.
Now any paint, PMS or deleted laminate colour can be matched in a powder coat finish on MDF board that's ready to be drilled, machined and fabricated for use in retail, commercial or residential joinery projects, large or small.
Allaporta's new Italian Kitset Cavity Slider - Kit Ferrara
This patented system is precision engineered to revolutionise cavity sliders. The superior rolling gear and folded steel frame have been specially designed to take panels weighing up to 80kg.
The reduced noise and dampened vibration make this the cavity slider of choice for European architects and designers.
Kit Ferrara is available in a wide range of sizes. It is easy to install and can be transported in an easy-to-manage box. It also has a manual self-closing option, COMO, which allows the door to close on its own, gently and quietly, after use.
Under Tile and Carpet Heating - Energy-efficient Warmth
Both Hotwire Under Tile Heating and Under Carpet Heating from The Heating Company International can be incorporated in renovation or new buildings. The installation investment is minimal and both have individual automated zone control. The systems are completely hidden, and when used in conjunction with automated controllers, are very energy efficient.
Hotwire design and installation is carried out by qualified tradespeople nationwide, providing quality assurance to specifiers and consumers. The In-Concrete (in-slab) system can be used for background heat to compensate for cold, polished concrete floors.
How many doors?
CS Cavity Sliders, OvertakingDoorS have been manufactured with a collection and guidance system that leaves the floor free from tracks. The system is an ideal room divider for residential or commercial spaces, where a large opening is required but there is limited door hiding space. Up to five doors may be fitted into this system, including the popular New Yorker glazed door option.
CS FOR DOORS offers New Zealand's largest range of in-wall cavity sliding systems that are all 100% NZ made and come with a 10-year warranty.
Resene's handy downsize
The BS5252 colour chart, based on the British Standard 5252, has stood the test of time and has been in the Resene suite of colour charts for over three decades. Recognising that the previously oversized chart can be a little difficult to wield on the job, Resene have made the colour chart more portable by downsizing it to A4 size. The chart is finished in Environmental Choice-approved Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen for more accurate colour visualisation.

Continuous Spouting Technical Manual
The Continuous Spouting technical manual is now on eboss, complete with CAD, PDF and MasterSpec downloads.
In the same format as its recently released hard copy version, the manual covers the complete range of spouting, downpipes, fascia, rainheads and snow-retention systems.
Canbrace® X Panel Manual on eboss
The Canbrace® X Panel manual is now available on eboss. The manual provides specifiers with product details, performance and installation information necessary to specify Canbrace® X Panel. Canbrace® X Panel is an in-wall bracing system that resists earthquake and wind loads on timber-framed buildings designed in accordance with NZS3604. The system allows the use of any wall lining because the linings are not required to provide bracing, the structure is braced during construction, meaning there is no need for temporary bracing and its performance is not affected by moisture, making it perfect for wet areas or where water inundation is a possibility.
Latest Innovation Balances Risk and Budget
The new DP955 roofing profile is the latest innovation from Dimond. It is designed not only to be stronger than traditional profiles, but also cost effective and faster to install. The challenge was to provide a high strength rib shape whilst allowing a generous wide style pan to allow for safe foot placement, resulting in less damage and fewer call backs to repair damage. To meet the challenge, Dimond researched using the inherent strength of a trefold arch shape for the ribs of the profile. The resulting shape is technologically advanced from a roll-forming point of view - a first in roofing resulting in patents for the rib shape.
Nuralite Warm Roof system in action
Nuralite has sourced quality product from Europe and combined it with its waterproofing products to make the Nuralite Warm Roof system. This system enables architects to achieve a clean contemporary style while still complying with the higher insulation requirements of H1.
Although the documented project in Auckland's Titirangi is for a new build with a plywood substrate, the system is suitable for use on most substrates and may be used for retrofit buildings.
Enduron - Commercial and Domestic Cladding System
Enduron has been used in Australia since 2000, in applications including internal and dividing walls, to fences, feature walls and sound barriers. The advantages of Enduron over other masonry products like brick, aerated concrete and concrete lock are the speed of installation (5 times faster than brick), the various finishes available (plastered, painted, schist or tiled), the customer protection warranty and the fact that one contractor can be used for cladding, plastering and painting.

It also acknowledges that Resene is a business leader focused on making ecological and social gains while still maintaining market advantages. Resene's sustainability drive started in the 1950s with the introduction of Australasia's first waterbased paint, well before the term 'sustainability' was coined.

Fireproof Your Building
Firepro Centabuild has a 20+ year history providing products to increase safety in New Zealand's buildings. The transmission of fire through airducts and vents is a major concern in high-rise buildings. Firepro carries a large range of intumescent fire grills to cover a variety of requirements. The intumescent material in fire grills swells rapidly to form a non-combustible barrier restricting the transmission of fire in a matter of seconds.
View the extensive range of fire protective products that Firepro Centabuild has on offer.
Flexibility with Canbrace
Canbrace® X Panel is an in-wall bracing system. The total bracing performance that is provided by the steel cross bracing within the panel means the wall lining doesn't need to perform any bracing function, allowing any wall lining to be used. Because any lining can be affixed directly to the wall framing - like serratone in a bathroom or timber on a feature wall - there is a substantial saving in material cost and time.
Caroma's New Behind-the-Wall Offering
Caroma has just announced the second generation of Invisi toilet suites, expected to be launched in April 2009. Following on from the original Invisi range, the Invisi Series II continues to provide the latest in design, in line with current bathroom trends, while providing easier and greater flexibility in installation. A stylish range of buttons, cisterns, and suites complement the Invisi Series.
Out of Sight Shouldn't Mean Out of Mind
Behind the wall is an unseen area of the utmost importance. Protection of your property is fundamental in ensuring your buildings longevity. Waterproofing Systems has been offering waterproofing protection to some of New Zealand's leading residential and commercial projects for well over ten years. Waterproofing System's Behind the Wall article outlines some key points to consider when choosing a waterproofing membrane and addresses the issues facing the industry in the current climate when dealing with protection behind the wall.
Greener Insulation from Autex
GreenStuf® thermal insulation and QuietStuf® acoustic insulation products are made from 100% polyester - one of the worlds most commonly used fibres.
Polyester and PET can be recycled indefinitely. GreenStuf® now contains a minimum of 45% already recycled fibre, and some Autex QuietStuf® products are made from up to 85% already recycled fibre. Autex manufactures all of its insulation products under strict ISO9001 quality control systems and a "Zero Waste Policy", where manufacturing off-cuts and waste are reprocessed or recycled.
GreenStuf® and QuieStuf® products are non-toxic, non-allergenic, non-irritant and completely safe. The "thermal bonding" process used ensures the products will not reduce in performance over time, earning them a 50+ year durability rating.
