Welcome to August's issue of ebossNOW
As always, ebossNOW features the latest in interior, exterior and environmental developments, as well as a special feature, which for August is H1 - Thermal Efficiency.
A national standard since last October, the focus of H1 is toward increased insulation, or 'R' values, throughout new houses and major extensions to existing houses, glazing, domestic hot water systems and more energy-efficient commercial lighting and HVAC systems. In our feature we profile products and services that will assist you in creating designs compliant with H1 standards.
August's issue is worthwhile taking some extra time to digest. For starters we have invites to the Lecture series by award winning architects McBride Charles Ryan, the VELUX Award 2010 competition, Autex's H1 training programme and the Green Building Summit. We profile the award winning Chews Lane Precinct development, a presentation from Claudio Accorsi on the transformation of the ceramic tile industry, as well as launch all the latest innovations and technologies from the leading suppliers to the architectural industry.
In August we welcome Starline wash systems, Ullrich Aluminium and COES plumbing products to eboss.
|
Finally here is a very happy Brent Hore, from Clark Crossen Carnahan in Auckland, receiving his Acer Netbook. Brent is a regular reader of ebossNOW and a user of eboss, who appreciates the ability to access all his regular product information within one online resource.
| |
|
If you missed out on the netbook, not all is lost, Dimond have another Netbook up for grabs along with Placemakers vouchers, for visitors to the new Dimond online technical resource for roofing and cladding, rainwater products and structural systems. The winner of the 1st $100 PlaceMakers voucher was Ron Waters from Accent Architecture in Wellington. Congratulations to Ron, there are more vouchers to give away, and another Acer Netbook valued at $899.
|
As always we welcome any feedback, and if you think ebossNOW would be of interest to a colleague or friend, please let them know.
Enjoy the issue.
Kind regards

| Living Architecture - bringing the architectural experience to the general public
In the UK, a team of inspired folk including Dickon Robinson - former Director of Development of the Peabody Trust, Mark Robinson, who managed the Serpentine Gallery Pavilions from 2000 to 2006, and architect Meredith Bowles, along with several high-profile advisors including Alain de Botton, has created Living Architecture. The aim of Living Architecture is to offer the general public the experience of living in a space designed with outstanding architectural practices. Examples of great modern architecture can be seen in public spaces such as airports and museums, but rarely does the public get the chance to experience a modern, architecturally designed home. The "Balancing Barn" in Suffolk from Dutch firm MVRDV and The Long House by Hopkins Architects are just two of five designs now underway from established and emerging world-class architects. All will be available for holiday rentals beginning in the UK spring of 2010.

| Green is now part of the BIM design workflow
Graphisoft EcoDesigner is an integrated energy-evaluation tool for architects and designers. It determines the energy consumption of buildings and sets new standards in sustainable design. In the early design phase, architects have easy access to much-needed energy information instead of relying on outside professionals to analyze the buildings when the design is well advanced and the decisions irreversible. EcoDesigner is available for ArchiCAD 12 on both Mac and PC platforms.

Double Glazing - the energy advantage is clear The government's recent changes to the NZ Building Code Clause H1 - Thermal Insulation - improve insulation standards for new homes and will include double glazing in most new homes and small buildings. The changes also highlight the need for efficient retro-fit methods to improve insulation in existing homes. It is now common practice to retro-fit insulation into ceilings, floors and walls, however, a lot of homes still have only single glazed windows, allowing a lot of heat to escape through the windows. Metro GlassTech has methods to retro-fit double glazing into almost any existing window frame, which can half the heat loss through the windows. When combined with Low E and Argon Gas, the heat loss reduction can be as high as 73%.

Pink® Batts® and compliance to H1 Although the changes to H1 have been in effect for some time now there are still questions about how to comply.
There are a number of approaches that can be used to show compliance with H1 clause, it's complicated and it is up to the designer to create a house that meets the new building envelope R-value. Pink® Batts® has developed the accompanying technical update to help designers to understand the effect of the changes to H1, outlining methods of complying with H1.

Insulation Redefined Plaster Systems Limited has developed the Graphex Solid Overlay system, which incorporates a graphite composite panel and 10mm of solid plaster. The permeability of the graphite material to radiant heat is greatly restricted, resulting in exceptional insulation.
Insulation properties of 20mm Graphex overlay with a solid 10mm of plaster can achieve a Thermal value of R1.05 or R1.7 with the 40mm Graphex overlay system. This R-value will exceed the new building code changes in all regions in New Zealand. Graphex incorporates Neopor®, a unique insulating product developed in Europe and used worldwide. This technology is exclusive to PSL Nuplex in New Zealand. Graphex technology was recently used on the popular European TV program, Grand Designs.

Rheem - meeting all requirements for the water heater market in NZ H1 dictates that all water heaters meet the NZS4305 energy efficiency standards. Rheem meets and exceeds heat loss and energy use standards in New Zealand for electric storage and gas storage cylinders - the Rheem "Stellar" is the most efficient gas storage water heater in New Zealand. All Rheem cylinders comply with MEPS heat loss testing, a requirement for storage cylinders sold in NZ - a hot water cupboard as remembered by most of us is definitely a thing of the past. When coupled to a renewable heat source, such as Solar or Heat Pump, a Rheem cylinder takes energy efficiency well beyond standard requirements and is the way forward for water heating in NZ.
