The Healthy and Safe Buildings section of August's issue of ebossNOW presents healthy and safe design products and systems in relation to the requirements, purpose and principles of the NZBC.

As always we bring you the latest news from the industries leading suppliers, including Altherm's profile on the new Queenstown Aquatic Centre, The Laminex Group launches their new Timber Veneer & Formica Ranges, and Dyson's Airblade.

Finally this month, we complete John Wardle's Lecture series, with the final two episodes on the unique houses and a fascinating coastal structure that John and his team have designed.

Nu-Wall online brings slicker delivery of information
This month sees the arrival of a new online resource devoted to Nu-Wall Aluminium Cladding. The objective of the new site is to offer a vastly improved interactive experience visitors requiring technical information and for those interested in the product's aesthetic qualities. A major element of the site is the technical details page, where visitors can download technical details in a range of CAD formats as well as PDF, selecting them via a 3-D graphical interface.
R-values: The weakest link is the frame
VELUX skylights and roof windows have excellent R-values, due to the high quality of both glazing and framing. The best performing roof windows are the traditional GGL and the new GGU EverFinish, with R-values for the glazing and frame of 0.71 (m2K/W).
Energy efficiency has been important to VELUX for 65 years, and R-values for all VELUX skylights and roof windows exceed the requirements of H1. The latest H1 minimum requirements will see VELUX using more double glazing and even better insulation materials.
Interior privacy solution from HPWF
High Performance Window Film's low reflective delivers a virtually uninterrupted, non-reflective outlook, night and day, similar to clear glass.
It also provides daytime privacy unlike clear glass, so that occupants can enjoy the view without those on the outside being able to look in. Manufactured using state-of-the-art technology, the films utilise a UV stabilised, high-grade polyester, incorporating a patented colour impregnation process. This stabilises colour fastness and reduces internal light reflection to under 13%.
Metalcraft Roofing 3D CAD flashing detail is now available
This month Metalcraft Roofing has launched new and improved online resources. There is a wide range of useful and informative features, including a new 3D CAD flashing detail interface with fully downloadable functionality, supported by easily accessable technical information on the full range of Metalcraft Roofing products.

Delta Roofing helps to reduce leaky building problem
A major contributor to the leaky building problem is the back up of water through downpipe drains due to surges going into joined pipes.
New regulations address this problem by requiring rainheads and removal of obstructions. Delta Roofing's solution is a bent pipe from outlet to drain in six metre lengths with no joins or seams to cause obstruction. The bent pipe reduces the cost of assembly, as well as the potential for leaks. The pipe can also be used underground if covered with a material such as scoria.
Handmade Concrete Paving
JAGAS manufactures wet cast concrete products. The core business being the manufacture of outdoor paving, JAGAS also manufactures specialist concrete street paving such as tactile (mobility) paving and replica paving in old streets (like Vulcan Lane, Auckland) and moveable traffic islands, to rationalise traffic control methods and costs. The complete technical manual is available on eboss.

The superior raw materials and advanced processes used to produce Graphex, makes it one of the most eco-efficient insulating materials available from both an economic and environmental standpoint. It is also 100% recyclable.
Foreno keep up to date with the new Water Efficiency Labelling standard
The emerging New Zealand standard to be aware of is a joint Australian / New Zealand Government initiative and is nick-named Water Efficiency Labelling standard, or "WELs" (AS/NZS 6400). The standard began with the droughts and overall shortages of potable water in Australia, but is becoming increasingly necessary in New Zealand. It has been mandatory in Australia for taps and shower outlets, among other appliances, since July 1 2006.
Autex GreenStuf® and QuietStuf® insulation products are good for you, and our environment – forever!

New Alsynite TS20 Twinskin Roofing System
Project specifiers are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of using Alsynite Twinskin Systems (TS 20) when designing facilities where condensation and varying temperature fluctuations are an important factor.
With rising energy costs, tenants can enjoy their working environment with less heating and lighting costs than previously experienced, as the system offers diffused lighting and almost completely eliminates shadowing. Utilising up to 30% of roof area, it is a passive interior lighting concept not previously available with single skin applications. A report on the Measurement and Calculation of TS20 Solar Optical Properties by Vipac Engineers and Scientists, Melbourne is available.

APL provides complex solutions
Indoor swimming pool complexes are highly technical buildings that must address complex air quality and heating issues. ASC Architects had to work around these challenges while shaping the new Queenstown Aquatic Centre into a building that paid homage to its unique setting. Altherm windows and doors were part of the design solution for the Queenstown Aquatic Centre project
Ecoglo and Horizon International team up to improve safety
Ecoglo and Horizon International recently teamed up to improve the safety of the front steps of the Palmerston North Court House during its recent redevelopment. Architect Opus International Wellington was keen to incorporate Ecoglo into the design and asked Horizon International if it would be possible to incorporate the photoluminescent contrast strips into their pavers, rather than having the strips adhered to the pavers after installation. The Palmerston North Court House case study shows how these two suppliers worked together to come up with a new safety solution for their client.
Dulux provides paint Solution to NZBC Health and Safety Concerns
Health and safety are important factors that are currently being reviewed in the New Zealand Building Code. The current building code addresses the issues surrounding the release of VOCs into the indoor environment at room temperature. Dulux's Enviro2 interior paint system is an excellent way to address this issue with its low VOC formula greatly reducing the impact on professional painters and clients, allowing clients to return to the building sooner after work is carried out, as well as a more pleasant painting environment.
Halstead duty of care
Duty of care responsibilities for occupants' underfoot safety in the workplace are deemed the building designer's responsibility under occupational health and safety legislation. Safety aspects are an integral part of the design process, and there are various guideline documents and current methods regarding slip standards.
Climate Coatings improves indoor air quality by eliminating paints and stains
NZBC H01.4 aims to mitigate the risk of illness due to contact with hazardous materials and substances which includes Volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Conventional paints can make indoor air a chemical cocktail, even long after they have dried, as they continue to release petroleum based solvents (VOCs) as they cure. Climate® pre-finished building products are all factory finished with a unique powder coating that is VOC free. Powder coating technology is a 100% solid paint system (no solvents or water) that is applied via electrostatic conduction. Climate's patented powder coat system for MDF, plywood and now plasterboard creates better products that improve indoor air quality.

These benefits are available for new homes and for renovations through the installation of Retro-fit double glazing and /or safety glass into high risk areas. See how Metro GlassTech provides health and safety benefits in the home.
