Innovative Solution for Disabled Access to Auckland Trains

When Auckland Transport identified a need to create equal access for the visually and physically impaired when entering and exiting trains, they approached Burgess Matting for a solution.

With strength in designing and creating innovative entrance solutions, Burgess Matting and Surfacing Ltd worked with Auckland Transport to develop a 5 x 2m ramp that grew at a 1:20 ratio to accommodate the problem height variation. Given the strict requirements for enabling disabled access, Burgess had to drill, adhere and accurately locate hundreds of tactile indicators to ensure the purpose made rubber access profiles were aligned with the specified safety measures.

The photos taken at the Panmure station, show where trains strategically stop to ensure specific carriages have direct entry and exit for those with physical disabilities. Since installation, Auckland transport has highlighted the success of the project and how a short term fix has inherently turned into a long term solution due to the functionality attributes that the Burgess Matting and Surfacing ramps provided.
