Asbestos Management: New Responsibilities for Property Owners

It was a timely reminder about the legacy hazards from this previously popular building material that even made its way into some paints and coatings.

Of particular interest to the design community when working with property owners on renovations, extensions and repairs, are the clear responsibilities laid out below.

5.1.1 Property Owners

Property owners, with the exception of owner-occupied private homes should:

  • Take all practicable steps to identify asbestos products within their properties and record its location and condition in accordance with these guidelines;
  • Inform tenants of the presence of asbestos and of any action relating to it that may become necessary;
  • Ensure that all contractors required to do work are informed of the presence of asbestos; and
  • Maintain a record of any works carried out in the area of the asbestos material.

Working in close partnership with your client can ensure that the legacy health effects from this hazardous product can be well managed throughout the construction job.
