BIM Survey 2015: BIM Use Gaining Momentum in NZ

The findings show positive momentum in the use of BIM. In 2014 34% of the control group's projects used BIM and this has increased to 45% in 2015.

The control group members (see list of organisations below) were invited to participate in the five year programme. This control group, by nature of its size, represents a significant proportion of the design and construction sector in New Zealand. The survey's results will provide a clear view of how the acceleration of the use of BIM is progressing, as well as providing a method of identifying obstacles to this acceleration.

In particular, there have been increases in the use of BIM in both the design and construction phases of the project lifecycle (design 67% in 2014, 83% in 2015; construction 59% in 2014, 75% in 2015).

For more information on the results of the survey, take a look at the 2015 BIM Benchmark Survey Report.

The report examines the actual use vs. predicted use by the control group in 2014:

  • BIM uses in detail (who is using)
  • Most popular BIM uses (what it is being used for) and
  • Those uses most likely to grow — the top BIM uses by profession

As well as insights into:

  • Barriers slowing BIM uptake
  • How to accelerate further industry uptake
  • Predictions of use for 2016

The slowest uptake appears to be at the operate stage — what is holding back the specialist sub trades from taking advantage of detailed information to assist them?

Government support seems to be seen as growing in importance. What is the appropriate role for government — assistance or mandating?
